What to do if you want to be successful on xTwitter
For the years I’ve been on X, I’ve learned what really works - and what doesn’t. Jumping onto the platform can feel overwhelming at first, with so many posts, voices, and trends happening all at once. But it doesn’t have to be confusing. Whether you’re here to share your thoughts, connect with others, or grow your presence, there are simple, proven ways to make your experience both fun and effective. Let me walk you through what actually works on X, step by step.
1. Never start a tweet with @
One thing I’ve learned over the years on X: never start a tweet with @. If you do, that tweet will be hidden from anyone who doesn’t follow both you and the person you’re mentioning. It’s a small detail, but it makes a huge difference for visibility.
2. Never flood the timeline.
Another thing I’ve learned over the years on X: never flood your followers’ timelines. Posting 10+ times in a short burst will usually annoy people - unless it’s a well-crafted thread. Remember: quality always beats quantity. A few thoughtful posts will get you much further than a dozen rushed ones. More so, the algorithm cannot boost all the tweets if luckily it doesn't flag your activity as bot activity.
3. Avoid deleting posts constantly especially after posting.
Every time you delete, it can reset the trust signals the platform has for you. People notice patterns, and frequent deletions can hurt your credibility and visibility - so post thoughtfully, and only remove content when it really matters. If not prompted to take the tweet down, always edit or wait after sometime to delete it.
4. Avoid copy and paste or duplication of content from other accounts.
The platform can detect duplicate posts, bot-like behavior, or mass-coordinated engagement - and when it does, your reach takes a hit. Focus on creating original, thoughtful content instead; it pays off far more in the long run. You are advised to always repost and quote, this is taken as adding value.
5. Avoid begging for follow backs or engagements.
Constantly asking people to “like if you agree,” “RT for good luck,” or running follow/unfollow schemes only hurts your credibility. Even “comment anything to join my group” can feel spammy. Focus on creating content that naturally sparks interaction - it works far better than forcing it. Avoid activities which may seem coordinated - like follow trains, groups and even spaces. All these are tracked by the algorithm and they call for limitations.
6. Avoid chasing every trend on X not every post is for you.
I once came upon a post which said "your role on x is to give as many unsolicited opinions as possible" well it was a meme. Only jump in if you have something meaningful to add. Forced takes or jumping on every trending topic just to be seen usually come off as desperate and it can actually hurt your reputation more than help it.
7. Avoid over replying to comments
As your account grows, you’ll notice it becomes impossible to reply to every single comment from your followers - and that’s normal. Most big accounts focus on verified engagements, because unverified accounts rarely contribute to the “check” or broader reach. Also, replying too quickly to every comment can make your account appear bot-like, which could trigger flags. Focus on meaningful engagement rather than trying to respond to everything instantly.
8. Avoid starting message conversations in direct messages.
Avoid starting conversations in DMs with people who don’t follow you, especially if your account isn’t verified. Doing so can trigger flags and make your account appear spammy. Stick to public interactions first, and use DMs carefully to build genuine connections. This also depends on the location of the account...
9. Don’t be overly toxic or report-bait.
Ragebait is content deliberately designed to make people angry - think posts that provoke outrage or attack others just to get reactions. While it might get short-term views, too many blocks, mutes, or reports can trigger platform reviews or limits on your account. Keep your content sharp and engaging, but avoid trying to stir anger just for engagement.
10. Avoid adult content if your account is not marked for adult content.
Avoid adult content unless your account is specifically marked for it. X has strict rules around sensitive material, and posting adult content without the proper designation can put your account at serious risk. Even if your content is borderline, always flag it correctly - this helps protect your account from suspension or other restrictions. The safest path? Keep your posts appropriate for a general audience unless you have a verified reason to do otherwise.
11. Avoid changing your profile content constantly.
Frequently swapping your bio, profile picture, or username can hurt your credibility and even trigger temporary lockouts or verification checks. People - and the platform - like consistency. Keep your profile stable, update thoughtfully, and make sure every change has a clear purpose. More so, your followers get acquainted to a specific look of your account therefore changing it now and then may come with confusion.
12. Never rely on hashtags.
Just because a hashtag is trending doesn’t mean it will help your content reach more people. In fact, overusing them can look spammy. Even Elon Musk has called hashtags “a nightmare” on X. Focus instead on using clear, relevant keywords in your posts - quality content always outperforms trendy tags. If you really want to use hashtags - TikTok is for you.
13. Avoid being racist.
From my years on X, I’ve seen firsthand how harmful language can destroy credibility and even lead to account penalties. X is a public platform - your words are visible, permanent, and impactful. Focus on engaging with ideas, not attacking people, and always keep your content respectful. I have always been told to delete such usage of words and your account never stays the same.
